more manhunt drama

according to blogger towelroad “manhunt chairman jonathan crutchley steps down from board”

“It should be known that Jonathan Crutchley’s donation to McCain left the entire Board in disbelief. I am disappointed that we have lost some customers, and I understand the anger. It is too bad for the web site if we lose customers…”

“Earlier today, at the request of the Board, Jonathan has stepped down as Chairman. Sincerely, Larry Basile.”

this is interesting to say the least…

manhunt responds…

we found this on one of our fav blogsites, towelroad. one of his readers sent manhunt an email about his concerns regarding their donations to mccain as well as to cancel his account. here is the response he received, “Dear Sir, We are always happy to hear from our members, thank you for taking the time to express your concerns. The subject that you have brought to our attention is a personal matter and is not representative of MANHUNT. We thank you for your understanding.”

clearly this issue isn’t going away anytime soon.

manhunt.net gives $$$ to mccain

i previously mentioned out magazine’s fantastic article “has manunt destroyed gay culture.” in the article we found out that one of the owners of manunt.net is a republican (jonathan crutchley). according to gay blogger towelroad mr crutchley has given $2,300 to the john mccain’s campaign for president. mr crutcley says, “i believe mccain will be a better commander-in-chief than obama, who also opposes gay marriage. if we have an experienced, seasoned person defending the country in this dangerous age, we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later.”

you can decide for yourself if you want to continue to fund mccain, via your manhunt subscription. i hear gay.com is hurting bad

sex with men but still hetero

we’ve all seen the ads “str8 guy needs great cocksucker” or “handsome masculine married irish guy seeks one or two hung married irish buddies who want head and maybe more.” however the thing many of us didn’t know is that in many cases the guys who say they are straight…really are! the article “straight men who have sex with me” in the la weekly looks at the reasons why hetero men get it on with other guys. sometimes it’s the need to just get off with no whining and dinning of the opposite sex. other times it’s reenacting earlier years of sexual abuse. the most common reason, other than to orgasm, seems to be due in large part because men aren’t really allowed to be have deep connections with other men. it’s an interesting article.

planetout in major trouble

according to the wall street journal’s market watch planetout, inc (the owner of gay.com) received notice from NASDAQ that it’s stock my be delisted (due to the market value not being $5,000,000 of publicly held share). recently planetout, inc sold off it’s gay cruise business as well as it’s publishing business (the advocate and out magazine). in july, they reported nearly $100 million in debt.

while this is sad news (as far as gay business goes) it comes as no surprise. it’s my belief they should’ve never traded publicly, should’ve never bought the cruise business or the magazines. also, one look at gay.com (or planeout.com) shows the companys lack of innovation. the sites haven’t had a new look in quite sometime, and are full of spammers. also, what is the deal with planetout.com?!? i truly hope the company is able to make it. i do think that glbt online market is still a viable market (look at the huge success of manhunt.net). i just think some bad business decisions have really strained this company.

i did read sometime back about a gay.com 2.0. i hope that comes and soon….

does cruising online hurt us?

the current issue of Out Magazine takes a look at manhunt.net and it’s effects on gay life (“has manhunt destroyed gay culture?”). this article is one of the best articles i’ve read in the magazine in a very long time. it really hits home with me, and i suspect many of you.

“Looking for Mr. Right,” countless Manhunt profiles claim, but until he comes along, they’re open to playing with Mr. Right Now. Online cruising has its place in gay society: Access to a satisfying number of Mr. Right Nows is part of the pleasure and the privilege of moving to the big city to be gay.

Beyond a certain point, though, perpetually settling for Mr. Right Now becomes a failure of hope. When you came out, you did it because you wanted something. Part of what you wanted was sex, but part of what you hoped for was the possibility of being loved as your true self. And when, as often happens while cruising online, we diminish the hopes that drew us out of the closet, we reduce sexy to a purely physical act.

When we do these things we lie to ourselves — and worse, we tell the same lies that our enemies tell about us. The fundamentalist canard about loving the sinner but hating the sin draws a nonsensical distinction between person and act. Cruising online, by encouraging us to separate sex from the rest of our lives, does exactly the same thing. These are falsehoods about human nature and about the place of love in our lives, and they undermine the belief that sex can be anything more than a pastime.

As a normative way of socializing for gay men, online cruising is a disaster. We need to recognize its effects — including its tendency to isolate us, encourage objectification, and diminish our sense of life’s nonsexual possibilities — as disasters. We need to recognize that too many of us, too much of the time, are cruising online because it is easier and feels safer than thinking about the love we are missing and the power we do not have. Too many of us, too much of the time, are cruising online because it’s easier and feels safer than mustering the courage, patience, discipline, and imagination required to help ourselves and each other become the men that, in our strongest moments, we want to be.”

that was just an excerpt from the article. i’d encourage you to pick up a copy or read it online (or both)
